Weight Limits on Town Bridges

Weight Limits on Town Bridges

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (DOT) notified the Town of Burrillville of their concern with the ability of certain bridges to support trucks carrying tonnage in excess of the posted weight limit. Of particular concern is the Shippee bridge located on Sherman Farm Road and the Round Top bridge located on Callahan School Street. The Department of Transportation requested that the police department enforce the posted weight limits. The Burrillville Police Department along with the State Police will strictly enforce the 5-ton weight limit on both bridges. The weight limit is conspicuously posted on all of the town’s bridges.

Fines for exceeding the weight limit range from $65.00 to in excess of $1,000.00. The fines are calculated on the comparison of the posted weight to the actual weight.

Truckers are advised to seek alternate routes when their vehicles exceed the posted weight limitations on the town’s bridges.
