The Burrillville Police Department K-9 Unit was formed in 1993 by then Sgt Larry Guglietta with his K-9 Kilo and Ptlmn. Guy Riendeau with his K-9 Conan. Both officers purchased their own German Shepherd dogs and had them trained at the RI Department of Corrections K-9 Academy. K-9 Kilo was trained in patrol tactics, area and building searches and narcotic searches. K-9 Conan was trained in narcotics detection and area searches.
At the present time K-9 Kramer, a Golden Labrador Retriever owned and handled by Ptlmn. William Blais is the departments K-9. K-9 Kramer is certified to detect narcotics by the State of Rhode Island and The National Police Work Dog Association.
Being a K-9 handler is not an easy job, not only does the officer have to take care of his duties, he must also groom, feed and excercise his partner along with participating in monthly training to keep their skills fresh.
