The Burrillville Police Department Special Response Team was started in 1998. The unit is trained to respond to situations that are above and beyond the call of routine patrols. By department policy, the SRT will respond to the following:
Hostage Situations
Barricaded Subjects
Threatened suicide involving weapons
Narcotic interdiction & entries
Mutual Aid to other agencies
Critical Incidents per order of the Chief
The police department Special Response Team (SRT) trains annually with the staff of Ocean State Power and Zambarano Hospital during "mock drills". During the most recent training, the SRT responded to Zambarano Hopsital for a disgruntaled employee who had taken a nurse hostage at knife point. During the suspects escape he and his hostage were stopped by police. Police Department negatiators were able to free the hostage and the SRT was able to take the suspect in custody after deploying the Taser. The exercise was considered very sucessful from all that participated. Zambarano Hospital officials were very satisfied with the response from the town's emergency services.
