Refuse and Recycling Information
Residents and businesses are reminded that recycling is mandatory in Burrillville and all are reminded to participate in the town-wide maximum recycling program.
Under the State’s budget for 2006 all cities and towns in Rhode Island must recycle a minimum of 20% of all the garbage generated. Presently Burrillville is recycling 21% of our garbage. Good Job to the residents who are doing their part to recycle as much as they can!
However, if the town falls short of the 20% quota we must pay a premium to dispose of our garbage. Today it costs you $32 for each ton of garbage sent to the landfill. Recyclables do not have a disposal cost due to their resale market value. If we fall short of the mandatory 20% quota, we pay over $42 for each ton of garbage above our allowance!
This cost comes out of our pockets!
By 2010, the governor and RI Resource Recovery Corp, a.k.a., Central Landfill have proposed to increase the recycling quota to 40%. With Burrillville only recycling 21% of our garbage, we have to increase recycling or pay an additional cost!
Over the next few weeks residential garbage collection routes will be canvassed to make sure everyone is recycling. Those who are not recycling; including multi-families and tenancies, must do your part to recycle.
FACT: The more Burrillville recycles the less tax dollars that are spent on waste disposal.
