Police Fleet

Many people ask about our equipment especially our police cruisers. The Burrillville Police Department depends heavily on its fleet. The police cruisers are mobile offices for the police officer in which they spend up to eight and sometimes sixteen hours per day. The cruisers must be comfortable, large enough to transport prisoners and equipment, and dependable. The Burrillville Police Department, like most departments, have used the Ford Crown Victoria. It is the largest, most reasonably priced automobile offered to law enforcement. In 2012, Ford discontinued the Crown Victoria. The Burrillville Police have recently purchased the new Ford Police Interceptor. The new interceptors have all-wheel drive and high output V-6 engines which have been very reliable and get approximately 5 miles per gallon more than the old Crown Victorias.

The police department installs a steel partition to protect the officer from rear seat passengers, shotgun mounts, and a console between the seats for mounting of a siren box, light switches, and a mobile data terminal. All of our vehicles have been equipped with LED light bars, rear deck lights and strobe lights on each corner of the vehicle. All cruisers are equipped with first aid kits, bio-hazard kits, an Automatic External Defibrillator, a floatation device, caution tape, a fire extinguisher, and a measuring device for traffic accidents. The current cruiser graphics were designed in 1991 from a combination of the Boston and Dallas Police Departments and have been so popular that they have been copied by other police departments in Rhode Island.

The Town of Burrillville is located in the Northwest corner of the State of Rhode Island.  This location has heavily wooded areas and receives a large amount of snow and ice each winter. For this reason, the Burrillville Police have a four-wheel drive vehicle and all the new cruisers are all-wheel drive.
