Code Red Message 4/24/20

This is Lisa Rabideau from the Burrillville Police Department with a message regarding scams:

During this difficult pandemic time, the  Burrillville Police are warning residents to be mindful not to fall victim to fraudulent requests for your money, your personal information, and/or your bank account information.   These fraudulent predators may offer to assist you with unemployment payments, government stimulus checks, and other reimbursements stemming from the Covid 19 pandemic.  These requests may come through a phone call, email message or text message directly to you. The fraudulent callers or message senders may pose as representatives from state or federal government, utility representatives, or representatives from the healthcare field.

We are urging you to be extra sensitive to any request for your personal identification information such as date of birth, social security number or any bank account information.  Do not comply with these requests. One of the strongest indicators of fraudulent activity is when someone is asking you to send them payment by purchasing gift cards, wiring money, or paying with cryptocurrency;  or if they are asking for you to reveal your personal information.

If you have the slightest doubt about any of these calls or messages you may be receiving, contact the Burrillville Police Department at 401-568-6255. For further information, please visit the Burrillville Police Department Facebook page as well as the department's website for a list of the type of fraudulent scams and activities that are in play in this community and all throughout Rhode Island.

Thank you, and stay safe.
