Burrillville opposes CREC

We don’t need CREC

The Burrillville Town Council’s has taken a strong position against the siting of the Clear River Energy Center power plant on Wallum Lake Road in Burrillville. One of the main reasons is that we simply do not need the plant.

The Brayton Point plant announced closure in 2014 and closed in May 2017 with no impact to the New England electric system. The addition of large amounts of solar and energy-efficiency have mitigated the impact of the units that have retired. There is the possibility of more retirements. However, less than one-half of one percent of the units in the system that have been delisted through 2020 are not going to retire but will sell only energy into the market. In addition, for the 2020/2021 time period, only approximately one-and-one-half percent (1.5%) have submitted a request to retire.

These retirement trends illustrate that the region is currently in no risk of losing “one-third” of its energy. In addition, it is likely that this will be replaced or offset with solar and energy-efficiency.
