Burrillville Police warn of "Grandparent Scam"

The Burrillville Police Department would like to warn residents of Burrillville of a telephone scam, commonly referred to as the “Grandparent Scam.”

Scammers are targeting older residents and portraying themselves as either attorneys or police officers, and claiming a grandchild has been arrested or in a motor vehicle crash and is in need of a significant amount of money.  The scammers instruct the victim to go to their bank to withdraw the money.  The scammers also advise the victim not to disclose to the bank teller any reasons for the withdrawal.  The scammers may even go as far as placing another person on the phone call, who attempts to impersonate the family member in need of financial         assistance.

Should you receive a similar call, PLEASE DO NOT withdraw funds from your bank. Instead, establish contact with the targeted grandchild for verification and/or contact the Burrillville Police Department for information.

Please call Burrillville Police should you have any questions, or need assistance.
