The September Statewide Primary is September 9, and General Election is November 3, 2026.

Signs, in general, including political signage, may not be placed on Town property. Town property includes, building and land, parks, Town parking lots, poles, street and traffic signs and rights of way on Town roads. A right of way (ROW) is a strip of land that runs parallel to all roads including curbs and sidewalks and is anywhere from three to ten feet (+ or -) on both sides of the road. Fixed or permanent signs, including fixed political signs, are not allowed on Town and State roads or rights of way without a permit (RIDOT or Town).

Private property owners who give permission for political signs to be on your property, please make sure the signs are clearly on your property or yard and not in a town or state right of way.  Signs should not obstruct the view of motorists.

If you don’t know where your property line is, consider using six feet from the edge of the State road, curb or sidewalk, and four feet off the edge of a Town road, curb or sidewalk as a guide to place political signage.

The State will remove signs that are placed on State roads, traffic signs and within the right of way. Note that some of the State ROWs may be greater than six feet, and fixed or permeant signs are not allowed without a State permit!

If the State removes signs from State roads (ROW), please call the DOT facility in Chepachet at 568-5373.

We respectfully ask that signs be removed shortly after the primary and general elections.

Please do not deface, damage, steal or “relocate” signs that are on private property. The police department has better things to do, but we will follow up if necessary, and no one wants that!
