Minutes of October 13 Recreation Commission Regular meeting

-letter from Louise Phaneuf, Town Clerk, that Jeff Hilton is no longer a Recreation Commission member

Old Business
Recreation Program Information:
-Burrillville Weekend Snack Pack Program – Dattco Bus Company and Pascoag Library have agreed to host drop
boxes for donations. Created a new trifold flyer and informational poster and posted around Town. Taco shop
has agreed to assist with fundraising and will give 10% of the day’s sales on November 19th to the program.
Researching other fundraising ideas including a dinner at Uncle Ronnie’s. We will be raffling off “Blizzard Survival
Baskets” at the Santa Event as another fundraiser. Volunteers are reaching out to all the churches to see if they
will be willing to accept donations from their parishioners. Dunkin Donuts has donated $150 to the program and
will supply donuts/coffee for our volunteer appreciation day. Atlas Pallet donated $250.
-Facebook- Posted pictures of the Snack Pack Volunteers and Packing Session as well as the Fall Floral and Craft
Work shop.

-Holiday Card Contest– 8 entries received. Cards to be selected by the Council prior to the November 9th
meeting. Ordered packaging materials for the cards.
-Karate- Postponed start date to November 17th. New flyers went out to all schools this week.
-New programs/classes – New Pound fitness classes to begin mid/late November.
-Parks and Rec Calendars/Newsletters/Website – November calendars distributed. Working on winter newsletter.
-Santa Calling – Santas have been contacted. Only 3 have confirmed to date. Santa will be calling students in
grade 2 and under from December 9th through the 13th. Updated Santa calling flyer.
-Santa at Stillwater – Dunkin has agreed to donate donuts. Supplies have been ordered – gifts, tablecloths,
candy canes. Dates changed on Signs. Will be adding a raffle item this year to benefit the Weekend Snack Pack
Program – Blizzard Survival Basket. Bargain Buyer ad to run the week of November 16th. BMS chorus to provide
live Holiday Music. Harrisville Fire Department has been confirmed to provide a Santa to arrive on a Fire Truck.
Trifold flyer and map have been ordered.
-School Vacation Fun– Three day multi-sport mini-camp scheduled for December 28th-30th from 9am-12pm at
the Callahan Gym.
-Special Needs Recreation Programs/Classes– Working with instructor Sioux Gaudreau to plan a once per month
Social Nite for adults with special needs. Working with instructor Sue Sgambato to offer a regular fitness class for
adults and children with special needs. Contacted interim director of pupil personnel students regarding the
desire to add recreation programs/classes specific to students and adults with special needs. Requested
suggestions for specific classes that would meet the needs of those in our community. Reached out to several
families of students with special needs for input as well.
-Stillwater Playground – Grand opening was well attended with approximated 20 people in attendance. Everyone
pleased with the outcome of the playground.
-Sunshine Club– Next meeting scheduled for November 23rd at the Lodge. Planning a thank you luncheon for all
volunteers prior to the meeting.
-Town Common Holiday Decorations– Harrisville Fire Department has confirmed they will once again assist with
picking up the tree and decorating the gazebo with lights.
Recreation Center Expansion Feasibility Study:
-Reviewed maps of land available for development, discussed new parks (softball, football)

Gonyea Park Updates:
-Completed, removing from agenda
White Mill Mark:
-Completed besides additional paving for handicap parking – removing from agenda
Spring Lake Beach / 2015 Season:
-Aaron Coutu had questions regarding where Spring Lake beach revenues would be distributed
-no new updates, removing from agenda
Stillwater Recreation Area:
-completed, opening ceremony earlier in November – removing from agenda
Hauser Lights:
-contract awarded to Kay eletric
-paving portion of lots to help with dust
Brown House:
-electric meter removed, service cut
-contract awarded to O'Keefe trucking
New Business
Recreation Commission Project Dedications
-Sharon Davies asked how the Recreation Commission can be more involved with opening ceremonies of
parks, etc going forward
Update on Champlin Hall Management Changes
-Jeff McCormick reviewed change of rental fees and rental agreement
