-AAA Bike and Traffic Safety Event – Event was a huge success with 18 people in
attendance.
-Burrillville Aging Stronger Committee – The committee working on expanding senior
programming and activities has adopted an official name and logo and now has a
facebook page. This committee is responsible for coordination the Lunch and Learn
Program and is currently working on other senior activities and services. The group is
comprised of member from Parks and Recreation, PUD, JSML, Town Manager’s Office,
and the Police Department.
-Boot Camp – There were 628 participants for the month of July.
-Brains and Balance Class – new class beginning September 4 for age 55+. Free of
charge, this 8 week session will teach seniors the importance of staying mentally sharp
and physically stable.
-Burrillville Weekend Snack Pack Program – Ten families have been participating in the
summer program. Next packing session scheduled for August 27th. BWSP board
meeting was held in July to discuss ways to expand the program in conjunction with
local food pantries. We will also be adding more nutritious foods to the weekly bags in
the fall as our funding will allow
-Facebook/Newsletters/Website- August calendar posted online and around Town,
Brains and Balance, Green Festival, Lunch and Learn and Aging Stronger facebook
shared, and Art Classes and Multi sport Camp posted.
-Forever Fit – Classes on hold until August 12th; instructor out on medical leave.
Approximately 27 people have been attending. Numbers recently dropped due to
weather conditions.
-Girls Softball –New Burrillville Girls Softball program to begin using Hauser in the
Spring. League is currently taking registrations and holding indoor clinics this summer
and fall and has set up a new facebook page.
-Hero Park – Exploring the possibility of upgrading Hero Park as many of the benches
and picnic tables need to be replaced. Reached out to Lowes and Home Depot as they
were big donors in the past. Working with Ultiplay regarding a small chance to the
design to include baby swings as that was requested by several residents. Planning to
apply for a Levy Foundation Grant to cover the cost of the renovations.
-Inner You Counseling – Met with the owners of Inner You regarding the opening of their
new location in Chepachet. They are interested in partnering with us to connect
residents with mental health services as well as to support both the Lunch and Learn
and Weekend Snack Pack Programs.
-Line Dancing – Classes cancelled for August due to lack of attendance during the
summer months.
-Rad Kids Program – Working with instructor and school department on the fall schedule.
-Senior Lunch and Learn – A total of 233 residents and 10 vendors have registered to be
in attendance for the August 8th event. Parks and Rec department created a raffle
basket. PUD solicited for gift cards from local stores and restaurants. Parks and Rec
volunteer assembled giveaway items for each attendee. Working on a grant for the Levy
Foundation to help offset the cost of the Lunch and Learn Program. PACE has agreed to
pay $250 towards the cost of the event.
-Senior Transportation Subcommittee- A survey has been created which will be handed
out at the Lunch and Learn to gauge interest in a volunteer transportation program.
Working with Providence Village on a pilot program modeled after their current
transportation program to offer volunteer transportation for residents in need. A
questionnaire will be handed out to Lunch and Learn participants on August
8th to gauge interest and recruit drivers. Met with RIPTA to discuss the modification of
their FLEX bus to include the Glocester Senior Center in the service area, as well
as make the 3 elderly housing complexes regular stops. In the last 13 months the FLEX
bus has made 10,000 one way trips in our area with approximately 100 people using the
service.
-Summer Camps- Art has 16 participants, Hoops had 21. Multisport Summer Camp has
13 participants.
-Summer Meals Program- Program continues to be a success at both locations.
Resident feedback has been tremendous.
-Sunshine Club– Next meeting scheduled for August 19th to make 19 Birthday gifts.
